月光苦苓樹藝術故事Moon lecture

A moon lecture is typically an artist making a talk or presentation about his or her area of art and interest. The format is informal, with lots of give and take and questions. The idea is to involve anyone who is interested in the discussion.

Often an artist will do a work, a piece of art or an installation prior to the lecture. The public is invited to join in and help in the creative process. This could take and hour, or a day or more.
The lecture is always in the evening and under the beautiful trees which are central to the courtyard. The Chinese name for the tree is: Kulin(苦苓樹). In English, the tree is: Melia Azedarach or China Berry. In the spring the trees have beautiful purple flowers similar to cherry blossoms so famous everywhere. In the summer the trees are heavy with lush green leaves and provide shade for the camp. In winter, the leaves fall leaving natural skeletons of beautiful branches around the camp.
After WWII the state of Taiwan was sad and many local writers used the word "kulin" as a symbol of their love of the earth that was so injured by the stress of the war and occupation. They chose this word because the tree named Kulin is very strong and "a survivor" and can be seen anywhere in Taiwan. It withstands the wind and rain and earthquakes...all that nature and man can threaten.
